Lord Shiva Curses the Shudra (Kakbhushundi in his previous birth)
A heavenly voice spoke from the temple: O ill-fated one! Fool! Arrogant one! Although your guru has no anger, he is very tender-hearted  and has (complete and) full possessed of true and true knowledge (understanding of the identity  of the self with the ultimate brahman.)Even then, you fool! I will curse you. (Because) I do not like anyone who goes against  ethics. O wretched one! If I do not punish you, the doctrine of My Vedas will be violated. The fools who envy their gurus, keep lying in the hell called Raurava for crores of yugas.. After that they take birth in subhuman species(animals, birds etc.,) and are tormented for ten thousand births in succession. O sinner! Since you remained seated like a python in front of your guru, take the form of a snake since your mind is steeped in sin. O basest of the base! And, condemned to that degraded state, go and live in the hollow of some huge tree.

The Brahmana, Guru of the Shudra
The Guru wailed in distress on hearing the terrible curse of Lord Shiva. And seeing me tremble with fear, deep agony  took hold of his heart. Reflecting on my awful fate, the Brahmana prostrated before Lord Shiva. With folded hands and  voice faltering with emotion, he made an entreaty as follows:

Appeasing Lord Shiva
I respectfully salute the formless source of the sound Om, the turiya (detached from the three constituents of sattva or goddness, rajas or passion and tamas or darkness) who is beyond speech, knowledge and the senses; the ruler of Kailash who is the fearsome Mahakaal (Shiva in his character as the destroyer when he is represented as black and as a personification of time), the merciful one who is the abode of virtues and is Parmeshwar or the Supreme Lord, beyond reach of the mundane world.
I worship Shiva who is fair-complexioned and dignified like the Himalayas, whose body is radiant with the splendour of crores of Kamdevs (god of love), the beautiful river Ganges is nestled on his head, with the crescent moon posited on his brow and snakes adorning his neck.
I worship Lord Shankar (working for our well-being)who is the Lord loved by everyone. Kundals (large ear-rings as worn by yogis) are dangling from his ears, he has beautiful eyebrows, huge eyes, and looks pleased. He is known as Neelkanth (According to the Puranas, Shiva received this name as he drank the poison that emerged from the ocean after it was churned for getting the nectar of immortality. With the power of his yoga, Shiva stopped the poison in his throat but it turned blue.) and is merciful. Putting on a garment made of lion skin, he has a garland of skulls draped around his neck.
I worship Lord Shankar the husband of Bhavani (a title of the goddess Parvati),attainable by bhava or love flowing towards the Lord, holding a trident in his hands, uprooting the three-fold pangs of suffering and radiant like millions of blazing suns. The Parmeshwar or Supreme Lord is unborn, indestructible, brilliant, supreme and the fearsome form of Rudra (a title of Shiva).
Be pleased, be pleased oh Lord! You are the enemy of Kamdev (god of lust), dispel illusion by churning the mind, are Sacchidanandan (being, thought and bliss,a title of the Ultimate Being) and the foe of demon Tripura. Granting constant delight to the virtuous, you bring about dissolution of the world at the end of a kalpa and are the svarupa who is beyond artistic skills as you work for our salvation.
Unless humans worship the lotus feet of Parvati's husband neither do they get happiness and peace in this mundane world and the next, and nor is their suffering alleviated. Therefore oh Lord, who dwells within the hearts of all living sentient beings, kindly be pleased.
I have no inkling of yoga (abstract meditation undertaken to bring the soul into union with the Supreme Spirit), incantations or religious observances. Oh Shambhu I respectfully salute you in particular at all times. Oh Lord, protect me from the many miseries of birth, old age and death which I am afflicted with. I make salutations to you oh God! Oh Shambhu!

The Rudraashtakam Placates Lord Rudra
This octet which is a eulogy for Lord Rudra was recited by the Brahman to placate him. Lord Shambhu is pleased with the person who religiously chants this hymn of praise.

The Brahmana asks Lord Shiva for a Boon
The all-knowing Shiva heard the Brahman's prayer and saw his loving devotion. That is when an etheral voice could be heard from the temple: O great Brahmana! Ask for a boon. (The Brahmana said) O Lord!  If you are pleased with me. And O master! And if you are fond of this meek person, then first grant me religious devotion for your feet and then give me another boon. O Lord! This stupid jiva (individuated soul) overpowered by your Maya  (delusive power) constantly wanders around (from one womb to another)lost. O Lord Shankar, merciful towards the needy! Be compassionate towards him now. O Nath! So that in a short while you bless him (by releasing him from the curse)after the curse.
