Spiritual Calendar July 2010

Yogini Ekadashi: 8th July The month of July 2010 starts with Yogini Ekadasi on 8th July, a Thursday. This Ekadasi occurs during the waning phase of the moon in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June – July). Its importance was explained to Yudhisthira by Lord Krishna. (Hema observed Yogini Ekadasi and got back his form of a yaksha which led to his being reunited with his wife.)Fasting on this day helps in overcoming the remorse of sins we have committed and leads us to moksha or salvation.

Lord Shiva's Pradosha Fast: 9th July This is followed by Lord Shiva's Pradosha fast on 9th July,a Friday. Pradosha occurs twice in a month on the 13th day. There are two Pradoshas – one during the Shukla Paksha or waxing phase of the moon and the other during the Krishna Paksha or waning phase of the moon. Fasting on this day grants us success, peace and fulfillment of our desires. It is believed that darshan of any form of Shiva during this period dispels ignorance.

Amavasya: 11th July Then we have Amasvasya on 11th July, a Sunday. Amavasya is the Indian name for a New moon. There is a natural surge of energies in the body on these specific days. Consequently Amavasya or new moon and purnima or full moon days hold a special significance for spiritual seekers. Any sadhana or religious observances performed during this time has a greater impact on the system.

Lord Krishna's Monthly Kirtan: 11th July We have the monthly kirtan of Lord Krishna begun by revered Manohar Baba at Malviyaji's residence on 11th July. In the Shrimad Bhagwat (11/14/24)Lord Krishna says, “Vaag Gadgada...Punaati” which means,” Those who take my name purify not only themselves but the whole world!" Lord Krishna tells Arjuna, “Geetava tu mam...ch Arjun” or “Oh Arjuna! Those who dance on taking my name, in fact, do really exchange me for good!”

Devshayani Ekadasi: 22nd July Then there is the famous Devshayani Ekadasi on 22nd July, a Thursday, one of the most important Ekadasis during the calendar year. As per the Puranas, God is said to take rest in Kshir Saagar on this day and steps out only after four months.(Dev Prabodhini Ekadasi will come about four months later on 17th November, a Wednesday, the 11th day of the first bright half of the Kartik eighth month of the Hindu lunar calendar.)Sanyasis call this period the chaturmaas and stay put at one place for these four months. It is believed that Hindu gods and goddesses are at rest.

Lord Shiva's Pradosha Fast: 23rd July Followed by Lord Shiva's Pradosh fast on 23rd July, a Friday, which ends in the pradosha or twilight period.

Gurupurnima: 25th July Then there is Gurupurnima on 25th July, a Sunday. The highest form of Guru is Lord Shiva Himself (Adi Dakshinamurthy), the ultimate knowledge, and a Guru is the manifestation of that knowledge. It is such an important annual festival that most Indians visit the ashrams of their respective gurus or spiritual leaders in Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mathura and Vrindavan. The famed puja or worship of Shirdi's Sai Baba also falls on this day.

Kanwarias in the month of Shravan. Soon after many devotees of Lord Shiva shall carry kanwarias to Haridwar/ Gopeshwar in the sacred Lord Shiva's month of shravan (name of the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar). A kanwar is a decorative bamboo pole carried on the shoulder with covered pots of water balanced at both ends.

Lord Shiva's devotees are known as kanwarias in the local dialect because they carry these earthen pots. Dressed in saffron coloured garments these pilgrims carry water collected from the Ganges in Haridwar and Gangotri from where the river originates in Uttarancahl and return to their home towns. Here they consecrate the lingams or phallic symbols of Lord Shiva as a mark of thanksgiving to him.

The first Monday of Shravan: 26th July, is dear to all the gods, especially Shiva, and every Monday of the month, devotees throng to Shiva temples throughout India to worship the sacred Shivalingam. The media will witness the great influx of devotees on second Monday (2nd August), third Monday (9th August), fourth Monday (16th August) and the last one on 23rd August, which is on Rakhi.

Saint Ushaji or Bobo's birthday: 30th JulyNext comes the most auspicious appearance day of Boboji or Saint Ushaji of hariharji.blogspot.com fame on 30th July.Let us bow to Ushaji whose ishtdev or favoured deities are Lord Radha-Krishna but Lord Shiva is the guru. Hence it seems but natural that she was born in shrawan, the month of Shiva.

If convenient:

  1. Keep a fast on every Monday from 26th July till Rakhi which is on 24th August.

  1. Daily offer water, milk and belpatras on Shivlingams, idols of Lord Ganesha and Ma Parvati at home or any temple.

  1. Also chant daily at least three beads of Om Namah Shivah and seven on Monday which is traditionally regarded as Shivji's day. In fact Shivji (incarnating as Hanumanji in Shri Ra) is paramguru of all Vaishnavas (Rameshwaram, Gopeshwar)NRIs may chant Shri Shiv Stuti daily which is available on internet as well.

  1. Do visit the sites of Shivji like Rishikesh and the 12 jyotirlingams during this month.

  1. In shrawan Braj,Vrindavan (Mathura) also has a special practice of swings being put up.The jhoolas of Lord Bihariji and Radha-Krishna are very famed. Shri Krishna Kripakataksha Stotram 8th Verse.

Chapter 45: Pilgrimage to Kamvan

Reveling on the birthday of Lord Krishna in 1985, the plan of visiting Barsana for Radharani's birth celebrations had been confirmed. As always they were to go to Barsana via Giriraj .Sushila Bahenji and Vijay were accompanying her. Bobo's eyes fixedly looking in front were slightly open. Sensing her to be in a trance,Sushilla Bahenji and Vijay insisted to know about her state. On reaching Giriraj when she was steeped in the surging waves of Mansi Ganga, Sushila Bahenji asked and Bobo revealed:

Priyatam Krishna With Priya Radha on Giriraj

“While sitting in the bus she saw Prya-Priyatam standing on the peak of Giriraj in a particular mudra .The breeze was proud of its good fortune as it frolicked with the divine Couple's garments.

Shri Radha-Krishna Gleam Like Moons

Wearing a blue-coloured veil, Kishoriji tried to conceal Herself from Krishna's mischievous glance by pulling it a bit. Humming, the Supreme Lover tilted to peep at her. Finally the veil slipped fully from Her head and Radharani's majestic beauty radiated. Both the moons were visible and enhanced the grandeur of that place.” The hint of a smile played on Bobo's lips as she narrated this episode.

Pandit Gaya Prasad ji

They went to have darshan of Shri Gaya Prasadji as well and he welcomed them warmly as usual.

The next day a programme was made to go to Parasauli which has the good fortune of being the bhajan site of Surdas and the playground of Shri Nathji.ShrimanMahaprabhu Vallabhacharyaji and Gosain Shri Vithalnathji have also visited this place several times. When they visited the samadhi of Shri Surdasji, the hut where he used to sing devotional songs,

          Parsauli Village

Bobo Saw Surdas Sitting and Singing Verses for Krishna

Bobo actually saw, “Shri Surdas sitting there as he used to and singing padas (devotional verses). The clever Shyam, the Supreme Lover stood behind him and Surdasji was conscious of this fact. Gradually he took both his hands behind and wrapped the handsome god in his arms.Tied in the bond of His bhakta, the blue-hued god also fondly put his arm around Surdasji's neck. On this gesture, Surdasji fondly exclaimed, “Oh it is you!”

Shri Kishorji was standing in front and touching the chin of Surdas she spoke in a very melodious tone, putting hundreds of tinkling anklets to shame, “Baba!”

Shri Radha Rani's Tinkling Anklets

Hearing such a mellifluous sound revered Bobo was ecstatic. Extending both his hands, Surdasji groped to touch her feet, and enthused ,”Laali is also there.”

the Shriji Temple in Barsana

Meanwhile preparations to proceed to Barsana for Radha Ashtami were made and along with Shri Thakur all of us came to Barsana .

Usually after Shri Radha's birth celebrations we would stay on till the the lilas Radha-Krishna were enacted but this time we left for Kamvan to see sites there.

Braj Gopis Yearn for Union with Krishna

Kamvan has also been acclaimed as the original Vrindavan, where the ardent longing of the Braj cowherdesses for union with Krishna is fulfilled.

Several sites sighted by worldly eyes urge us to relish the lilas of Krishna and make them perceptible for us even today.

Vimal Kund

We had darshan of Vimal Kund,

 Kameshwar Mahadev

Kameshwar Mahadev and many other sites welcomed by a slight drizzle of rain. Everyone seemed to be delighted by this joyous journey but revered Bobo was absorbed in a particular bhava.

Charan Pahari

She went with the others for sighting Charan Pahari and Manohar Dasji accompanied them. On reaching the top she turned her gaze to look all around. The beauty of that place bathed in the slight sprinkling of rain ,as far as the eye could see, had nature strutting around spiritedly to give a message loaded with the sweetness of Krishna. She saw, the handsome Shyam flinging up the flute held in his hands on the same mount.

Supreme Lover Krishna Plays the Flute for His Beloved Radha

His ardently capricious state was obvious by the dancing movement of His limbs. He could sense that Priyaji was nearby and sang those notes which were dear to Her. Beloved Radha hid Herself from the gaze of the Supreme Lover by holding one end of a creeper which wound around a tree. A peacock spreading out its wings in a rapturous state broke the stillness of the place at times.

With His sidelong glance the dark god has seen Shayamaji and blowing a melodious note into the flute shook Her out of her reverie.Unknowingly Priyaji moved ahead and arrived there. Her tinkling anklets and the girdle of bells around her waist sounded with ravishing melody.Resting her head on Krishna's shoulder she indicated her impassioned state.

Beloved Radha Plays Krishna's Flute

At this end Krishna mischievously removed the flute from His lips and asked Radha to play it. Being well versed in the 64 arts Priyaji is adept at flute play.Only rasikas have the right to gain entry and relish the divine play of Radha-Krishna.

Darshan of Gokul Chandramaji

Gokul Chandramaji

The next day Bobo went to have darshan of Gokul Chandramaji when He is woken up early in the morning. Nature seemed to be ringing because of the sattvic (pristine) environment in that secluded place. Some devotees were singing the pada of a daan-lila (Krishna's exaction of tribute from the herdgirls of Braj as they go with their milk etc to market). Absorbed in their playful dalliance Bobo noted a charming perception which is set to a literary composition.

“Priya-Priyatam are sitting in a nikunja. Stepping out the handsome god teasingly whispers something to a crazed maiden, which she alone knows. At this end clad in a reddish saree Priyaji is present, absorbed in some love escapade. The dark god hides Her with His yellow sash and again speaks to the cowherdess, who has a pot of curd perched on her head. Enraptured she keeps looking at the Supreme Lover. The terrifying rush of love invades her heart and she goes to sell her milk-curd. Now Priyatam bends and says some words to Priyaji which lead to expressions of inspiration and delight flitting across Radharani's face.

A Brajbala (Bobo) Observes Shri Radha-Krishna

This is seen by another maiden (revered Bobo) standing in the shade of a tree near a thicket. An expert in the art of dallying, Kanhaiya whispers into Priyaji's ears because of some spirited antic and smiles. She tries to push Him away with Her right hand. With that intoxicating smile the handsome Shyam looks at me (Bobo). Because of His glance I can not resist His thrusts of ecstasy, His secret or His sudden love because of His glance. How amazing is this vast ocean of madhur where rasa  pervades and overwhelms us.

Ecstatic on savouring these lilas, Bobo stayed there for a couple of days and returned to Barsana again.

It was her routine to go for darshan of Shriji (Radharani) and she would go via 'Priya Kund', 'Bhanu Sarovar' and often through 'Gahar Van'.

Sankhri Khor

She would circumambulate Sankhri Khor, Chaksauli, Shri Krishna Kund, at times 'Mor Kutee' and many a time 'Vilas Garhi' and 'Man Garhi' and then climb upwards.

Going through Sankhri Khor she saw, “ Dark reddish curtains draped over the mountain range towards Vilas Garhi and pillars coated with the lac coloured tender cloth and the same fabric spread out on the platform below.

Parrots Talk About the Playful Dalliance of Shri Radha-Krishna

The Supreme Lover is lying upside down and seems to be expecting someone. The chirping of birds can be heard amidst the cluster of trees and at times herds of peacocks cry out melodiously to break the silence.Perched on a tree in front a pair of parrots are probably raving about some playful dalliance of Radha-Krishna.Soon after a flock of peacocks fervently flew from the right to left and the startled Krishna looked upwards.

It seems the god is waiting for the cowherdess who is getting milk-curd. While from Chaksauli Village a gopika adulates the passionate state of the Lover with a pot of curd balanced on her head. She is supporting the earthen pot with her hand but is so absorbed that she bends backwards and has no inkling when the pot falls and breaks. Vrishbhanu Nandini who is coming from another path looks up, wondering how the pot broke.

The lakuti (a small club held by Krishna) lies near Him and He shows it to Radharani to prove he has no hand in the episode.

Krishna's Sidelong Glance

Priyaji mumbles, “Not with the club but you have broken the pot with your sidelong glance.” Radha-Krishna intently gaze at that milkmaid and pampers her.

Every moment Bobo relished the sweet beauty of Shyama-Shyam, their charming divine plays and became a character taking part in their playful dalliance.

Shri Ramraksha Stotra

Lord Shiva ordered Rishi Budhakaushika in his dream to write the Ramraksha Stotra. The Ramrakshakavach is used in japa or incantation for pleasing Shri Ramchandraji and acts as an armour which shields us from worldly suffering.

Shri Hanuman Bahuk

The Hanuman Bahuk sings the glories of Shri Hanumanji and was written by Goswami Tulsidasji to relieve him of intense pain. The stotra consisting of 44 padas is an asset for alleviating the suffering of mankind.Devotees of Shri Hari and upasakas of Shri Hanumanji religiously recite the hymn and have their cherished wish fulfilled.
